Why Davey Havok’s Sleeve Tattoos are Always Covered Up?

Davey Havok, the vocalist of extreme punk rock bands such as A Fire Inside and Blaqk Audio, used to have numerous tattoos on his body, particularly on his arms.

However, he had his sleeve tattoos blackened out in 2016 for a very personal reason.

The Reason Havok Covered Up His Sleeve Tattoos

Havok has spoken out a few times about why he blacks out his sleeves. In a November 2016 episode of Deeper Interview with Nikki Sixx, the vocalist shared his side of the incident.

The musician informed Nikki that he had been dissatisfied with his tattoos for years, forcing him to wear full-sleeve t-shirts. He stated at the time that his hatred for tattoos stemmed from the fact that their cultural representation had evolved through time, and they had begun to signify something he was not a part of.

The trend of people blacking out their sleeves in the 1990s also inspired his decision to blackout his sleeves.

The musician informed Sixx that his blacked-out sleeves were the consequence of combining these two concepts.

The singer stated in the interview that before blacking out his arm, he spoke with his good friend and mentor, R.J. Lime Peters, who supported him to go forward with the decision.

But he had yet to reveal another aspect of this decision. In an interview with The Washington Times in February 2017, Havok discussed how he was continuously changing, and that blacking out his sleeves was part of it.

He was still covering his sleeves, he explained “I’m not sure how long it will take me to finish it or how far I’ll go with it. As you are aware, I am continuously altering in an attempt to cover up terrible judgments with even worse decisions. That’s how I go about my days.”

The reporter then asked if he was attempting to erase his past. The singer responded negatively, stating, “History cannot be erased; it can only be concealed. It’s still alive beneath the scars.”

Tattoos by Davey Havok

Almost half of the singer’s body is covered in tattoos.

The most eye-catching of them is a burning heart tattoo on the rockstar’s chest. Six nautical stars flank the burning heart, and daggers pointing downward run down the sides of his ribcage.

The singer’s back is adorned with an equally spectacular tattoo. He has massive black wings that cover a large chunk of his back. The artist’s wings emerge from between his shoulder blades and descend to his hips.

Let’s move on to his arm tattoos, which he has now covered with a black cover. His entire arms were covered in jack-o-lanterns, black cats, witches, and ghouls, resembling the theme from The Night Before Christmas.

The tattoos are now covered up. But not completely. The black covers are arranged in a pattern. Cracks appear between large black patches on his arms, revealing some of the old tattoos behind all that blackness above.

Could this be a decision he made to virtually reinforce his thoughts about the past always being present? Was this a merely stylistic decision? We’re not sure, but they certainly appear to be cool.
