Who is Bianca Andreescu? Know about Rising Tennis Star Bianca Andreescu’s Parents

Bianca Andreescu

Bianca Andreescu of Canada is the rising tennis star blazing a trail at the 2019 U.S. Open. The No. 15 seed is set to face Serena Williams in the finals, but she’s already amassed an army of fans who cheer her on at every step.

Her parents, on the other hand, are her first and most ardent supporters. Bianca’s teammates on the court, Maria and Nicu Andreescu are the proudest of her current winning streak. If you haven’t already seen them, here’s a rundown of Bianca Andreescu’s parents.

Bianca Andreescu was Born in Romania to Romanian Parents

Bianca Andreescu was born in Mississauga, Ontario, on June 16, 2000, to Maria and Nicu Andreescu. Maria and Nicu are both from Romania. They moved to Canada in 1994, shortly after finishing their college studies.

Nicu Andreescu earned a BS in mechanical engineering from the Technical University of Brasov in Romania. He accepted a job offer that brought them to Canada after marrying Maria.

Maria Andreescu studied economics at Romania’s University of Craiova. She had recently completed her MBA in financial management.

“We only had two suitcases when we arrived in Canada,” Nicu recalled. “Having come from a former communist country, we made a great first impression.” We wanted to go to Canada to start a new life and give our children a better future.”

Bianca moved to Romania with her mother when she was six years old. Maria ran a trucking company there for two years. Nicu stayed behind to finish his work.

Bianca’s Father works as an Engineer

Nicu Andreescu studied engineering in Romania and has been a tooling/gauge engineer at Matcor Automotive Inc. since 1996.

Nicu dabbled in tennis, but nothing like his daughter. The father and daughter recall fondly one of their previous matches. “I had dabbled in high school and university.” I can hit the ball. So I bet her $50.00,” Nicu said, promptly losing.

When he and his wife moved to Romania, his daughter discovered tennis. There, she met her first tennis coach, a family friend. Bianca trained in Pitesti after school with her coach’s son.

They spent the summers in Nicu before returning to Canada for good after two years. Bianca’s tennis career would take a new turn upon her return to Canada. Tennis Canada scouted Bianca and “picked up the tab” for her training after recognizing her championship-winning swing.

Bianca chose Canada over Romania because, as her father put it, “Tennis Canada shaped her into the person she is today.” It’s why Bianca wants to win as many titles as she can for Canada.

Bianca’s mother works for a Financial Firm

Maria Andreescu has worked as a compliance officer for Global Maxfin Inc., an investment firm, since 2009, shortly after her family moved back to Canada.

Bianca was so active and fearless as a child, according to Maria, that they were afraid they’d have to put a helmet on her. Bianca’s parents channeled her excessive energy into tennis after she demonstrated her talent with a racquet at the age of seven. “She tried every sport but naturally gravitated toward tennis,” Maria explained.

The couple is still adjusting to their newfound celebrity as the parents of a rising tennis star. When Bianca plays, Nicu is glued to the TV in their Vaughan home, but Maria can’t handle the pressure. She retires to her bedroom and receives periodic updates from her husband.

Bianca travels around the world to play while her worried parents stay at home for work. They do, however, occasionally make it to her matches to cheer her on. And if she has a bad day on the court, they are there to cheer her on. Her parents, on the other hand, have been a constant presence on the court during the US Open.
