Kenny’s death hoax started on Twitter and quickly spread to Facebook. When someone paid respect to the star on Twitter, the hoax gained traction. There was a photo of Kenny with the most well-known character he ever played, SpongeBob.
In the Tweet, the reason for the actor’s death was not stated. Even though there was no news regarding the actor suffering from illness, netizens came up with imaginative answers and assumed that he had died of cancer.

Following this, Twitter users and internet users began to retweet “RIP,” reacting to the false rumor without waiting for official confirmation. It’s possible that whoever initiated the hoax did so as a joke or to garner retweets and followers. Regardless, it worked, and the photo was shared by a large number of people on social media.
Kenny was the subject of death rumors in 2011 as well, in addition to the 2012 death fake. So much so that in the early 2010s, Google’s top suggestion for the actor was “Tom Kenny Dead.” Despite such rumors, the actor is still alive and well in 2021. On Variety’s YouTube channel on July 19, 2019, the actor discussed Stephen Hillenburg’s legacy. In 2018, Hillenburg, the creator of SpongeBob SquarePants, died.
Kenny isn’t the only celebrity who’s been the subject of death rumors. Famous actors and actresses such as Morgan Freeman, Eddie Murphy, Kanye West, and Reese Witherspoon have all been pranked in the same way by trolls on Twitter and other social networking platforms.
