The recent death of Storm Chasers star Joel Taylor drew attention to the death of another storm chaser, Matt Hughes, in 2010. Matt’s untimely death, like Joel’s, had nothing to do with storm chasing.
So, what became of Matt from Storm Chasers? How did he pass away? This heartbreaking story is being revisited right here.
Storm Chasers on Discovery focused on a group of people who were not afraid to enter the eye of the storm. Matt Hughes, a Kansas native, was one of them.
Fans who followed Matt’s storm-chasing adventures on the show were shocked to learn of his death. If you missed what happened, keep reading to learn more about Matt’s tragic death.
Matt Hughes: Who Was He?
Matt Hughes, a meteorologist from Wichita, Kansas, rose to prominence after appearing on Storm Chasers. He was 30 years old when he died.
Matt’s Storm Chasers journey began as a spotter for top storm chaser Sean Casey. Matt has seen around 100 tornadoes in his 15 years of storm chasing!
Even though Storm Chasers ended in 2012, Matt’s bravery in facing tornadoes and providing viewers with the best coverage will be remembered.
Matt was survived by his wife, Kendra, and their two sons, Hunter and Collin. Discovery established a memorial fund in his honor after his death.
How Did Matt Pass Away?
Fans were taken aback. Matt’s death was announced following a Storm Chasers episode in November 2010. But, even more shocking, he died almost six months earlier, on May 26, 2010, of complications from a suicide attempt.
He attempted suicide on May 14, according to reports, but was discovered alive. He was rushed to the hospital by first responders.
In a blog post, Matt’s close friend and colleague Aaron Blaser described his days in intensive care, saying, “There was a 24-hour vigil outside the waiting room, family, other chasers, business associates, etc.”
Aaron also revealed why Matt Hughes attempted suicide, saying, “I knew we were going to lose him.” Many of us were unaware that he suffered from depression.”
Matt died after less than ten days in intensive care from the injuries he sustained as a result of hanging himself.
Tributes to the Courageous Storm Chaser
Moving tributes to Matt poured in from Discovery producers, colleagues, and family.
Matt was honored in a Storm Chasers episode on November 3, 2010. His final storm intercept was included.
Kendra and his mother, Cindy, issued a statement a few days after his death was announced.
“We want the public to know what his many family, friends, and coworkers already know; Matt Hughes was truly a wonderful and caring person with such a kind and loving spirit,” the statement said. Those who knew him couldn’t help but love him.”
The Hughes family also stated that they “never intended to conceal the circumstances surrounding Matt’s death in order to deceive the public, but rather to allow us to grieve privately while also protecting the many young children who have been affected by this tragedy.”
They also shed light on the devastation caused by depression, stating, “Depression is an extremely common, yet treatable, condition.” Those who are aware of, or may require, help should seek treatment or contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at (800) 273-TALK (8255).”
