Syukuro Manabe– Professional Career

In 1967, Syukuro Manabe was the first one to develop three-dimensional models of the atmosphere with director Joseph Smagorinsky while working at the NOAA’s Geophysical Fluid dynamic Laboratory in Washington DC and back in Princeton, New Jersey.

During the first attempt, they pioneered a solo column model of the atmosphere in radiative-convective equilibrium with the useful result of water vapor. While using the model it was found that the temperature increases at the Earth’s surface even in the troposphere as a result of the change in the atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide, but it decreases in the stratosphere.

This discovery of the radiative-convective model was one of the important initiations toward the progress of the global circulation model of the atmosphere. In 1975, Manabe and Wetherald used this model to simulate the three-dimensional result of temperature and the hydrologic cycle to the increased level of carbon dioxide.

Even Manabe’s mates are found to be talking about his interest in the weather. Manabe moved back to Princeton University and attended as a lecturer till 1997. He worked as Director of the Global Warming Research Division at the Frontier research team from 1997 to 2001.

In the early 2000s, for the investigation of the time-dependent response of climate to changing greenhouse concentration of the atmosphere Manabe’s research group exposed seminal papers using both atmosphere-ocean models.

Later, the model was used in the study of previous climate change involving the part of freshwater loading to the North Atlantic Ocean as a possible effect of the sudden weather and climate change in the record.

In 1995, Manabe was given Asahi prize from Asahi-News cultural foundation. Similarly, Syukuro Manabe received the Volvo Environmental Prize from the Volvo Foundation. He was awarded the Benjamin Franklin Medal from Franklin Institute in 2015.

In addition, the American Meteorological Society’s Carl Gustaff Research Medal, Meisinger Award, and the second half-century award have been honored by him. Manabe was awarded the Crafoord Prize in 2018 and the order of culture in 2021.
