The actor had several fake tattoos on his body for this job, but the ‘dagger with blood droplets’ on the left side of his face attracted everyone’s attention. Derek Cianfrance, the film’s director, claimed in a 2013 interview with NPR that the actor was eager to cover himself in tattoos and that he was not responsible for them. He stated, “I did not put that tattoo.”
When Cianfrance was asked how it got to that stage, he stated Gosling called him six months before the team began filming and gave him the idea for “the most tattoos in movie history.” The dashing actor expressed his desire for a dagger pouring blood in facial ink.

Principal photography had just begun when Gosling asked if they could reshoot sans the face ink. “The movie is about consequence,” Cianfrance remarked, “and now you have to live with your choices.”
When asked about the face tattoo in a 2013 interview with Cinema Blend, the actor said it was distracting and that he went too far. He admitted to experiencing a “genuine sense of humiliation,” but noted that it gave the character a unique quality.
Gosling eventually accepted his error and gave a profoundly melancholy performance as Luke in the film. I made these decisions to look this way, and it did enhance the performance in ways that I could never have imagined.
