The Professional Career of Neela Wickramasinghe
Wickramasinghe received his musical training from Vincent Somapala and Ananda Jayasinghe. She made her début on Radio Ceylon’s ‘Amateur Voice’ show in 1959. In 1967, Neela Wickramasinghe was offered the chance to record her first single with Radio Ceylon. In 1973, she was selected as an A-grade artist based on songs performed by the SLBC’s study section.
After learning North Indian Classical Music, she received a Sangeeth Visharada Degree in 1974. Wickramasinghe had several hit songs, including collaborations with T. M. Jayaratne. Wickramasinghe later chose to become a piano teacher. After 23 years of teaching in various institutions, including an eight-year stint at Visakha Vidyalaya in Colombo, she chose to resign early in 1998. Wickramasinghe was afflicted with and overcame severe abdominal cancer.
Wickramasinghe founded “The Mother,” a charitable group, in 2002 to serve children, the elderly, and artists who have dedicated their lives to the region. She was the head of the group. Wickramasinghe participated in the UNICEF Initiative to Save Children by Eliminating Polio in her country in 1989. She performed a song composed specifically for the promotion, which was extensively aired on radio and television. Her efforts during this campaign significantly aided in the eradication of polio, and by 2000, not a single case of polio had been recorded.
