Matt Rife is the youngest of four siblings, with three older stepsisters and one younger half-sister. When Rife was one year old, his father committed suicide at the age of twenty. 

According to a March 5, 1997 obituary in the Columbus Dispatch, Michael Eric Gutzke, 21, died on March 3, 1997, in Columbus, Ohio and was the father of Matthew Steven Rife.

Rife was previously married to actress Kate Beckinsale. He now lives in Los Angeles, California.
