Lori Lightfoot- Biography
Lori Lightfoot is the first LGBT black woman who got elected as the mayor of a major city in the United States. She is the 56th mayor of Chicago, Illinois, and worked in various government positions. Lightfoot defeated Preckwinkle and became the second woman and third African-American mayor of Chicago in 2019.

Lori Lightfoot was born in Massillon, Ohio on 4th Aug 1962. Her mother’s name is Ann Lightfoot who was a school board member and nighttime healthcare aide. Lori’s father’s name is Elijah Lightfoot who was a janitor and a local factory worker. She was the youngest of four siblings in her family.

Lori Lightfoot- Education Details
Lori Lightfoot graduated from Washington High School where she actively participated in various sports like volleyball, basketball, and softball. She played trumpet in the school band. Besides that, she was also a yearbook editor and Prep club member. Lori was selected as president three times in her school and she added more flavor and improved the quality of pizza in school.
In 1984, Lori graduated with Bachelor’s in Arts in political science from the University of Michigan. She had to work several jobs to pay for her education.
Additionally, Lori graduated with a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Chicago law school in 1989. She became the president of the school and she got a full scholarship for her study.
Lori Lightfoot- Professional Career
Firstly, Lori started her career as an attorney at the Mayor Brown Law Firm after her graduation. She became Assistant U.S Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois. She was working as a federal prosecutor where she helped in the prosecution of those accused of Federal crimes and drug cases and assisted the FBI in Chicago corruption.
In 2002, Lori Lightfoot was hired as a chief administrator of the Chicago Police Department of professional standards by Police superintended Terry Hillard. She monitored the misconduct of police officers and police shooting civilians.
Further, Lori moved to the Chicago office of Emergency Management and communications. In 2003, she became deputy chief of the Chicago procurement services. Her boss was Mary Dempsey. Together they investigated Chicago corruptions, probes of then-Governor of Illinois Rod Blagojevich’s associate Tony Rezko and prominent Dley donor Elzie Higginbottom.
After some time, she left the department of procurement services. The position went back to mayor brown. After that, she became a finalist for the position of U.S Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois but she lost against Zachary T. Fardon in 2013.
Meanwhile, she represented two Republicans in two cases protesting Democratic gerrymandering and served on the boards of the Illinois chapters of NARAL and the ACLU.
In 2015, Lori returned to the public sector as the president of the Chicago Police Board. She recommended and took action against police misconduct and eventually, she fired 72% of officers in its cases. She was a chair of a special police Accountability task force.
But she resigned from Police Board in May 2018 and announced her mayoral campaign.
n 2nd April 2019 She got elected as the mayor of Chicago. Most importantly, Lori became the first LGBTQ mayor. She became the first black female mayor of Chicago with 73.70% of the votes and won in all 50 wards of the city.

Lori Lightfoot is a lesbian. She married Amy Eshleman on May 13, 2014. Amy is a former employer of the Chicago Library. They have adopted a daughter. She is untroubled about her personal life.

In Oct 2020, Lori got the NMQF Honorable John Lewis Lifetime Achievement Award by the National Minority Quality Forum.
Moreover, she is represented among the fifty heroes “leading the nation toward equality, acceptance, and dignity for all people”. It was honored by the LGBTQ Pride parade, Queerty in 2020.
