Jane Pauley met her future husband at a small dinner party hosted by her friend Tom Brokaw and his wife Meredith while she was in her late twenties. She had no idea at the time that a stranger named Garry Trudeau would become a pivotal figure in her life.
But, because their chance of meeting sparked their friendship, their romance blossomed, and they married a few years later.
Her Husband works as a Cartoonist
Garry Trudeau, Pauley’s spouse, is a cartoonist and the creator of the Pulitzer Prize-winning comic “Doonesbury.”
But it’s safe to say his illustration talents didn’t initially impress the CNN host. Pauley had never seen the Doonesbury before meeting the Yale graduate, even though it had featured in approximately 2,000 newspapers and on the cover of Time magazine.
His sense of humor wowed her. And on June 14, 1980, the couple married with mutual feelings.
Even after the wedding, humor remained an important aspect of their relationship since it brought the shy Pauley and her party-loving husband together. That combination also allowed them to enjoy their four-decade marriage with the joys of children and grandparenthood.

Work-Life Balance and Motherhood
Pauley juggled her roles as a working mother and a loving wife.
On December 30, 1983, three years after her wedding, the Indianapolis native gave birth to twins Richard Ross Trudeau and Rachel Trudeau.
She gave birth to her third child, Thomas Moore Trudeau, in 1986 while working for the NBC chat show Today. She took a three-month maternity leave to care for her child, after which she returned to work.
The return to work, on the other hand, took its toll; the CBS Sunday Morning host felt awful about leaving her children at home.
During an interview with People on October 27, 1986, Pauley reaffirmed how important her work was to her while also revealing her love for her children. She wished she had never had to sacrifice her dreams for the sake of her family.
My children understand that Mother’s primary priority is to be with them. But I don’t believe it needs to be either/or.
And, as previously stated, despite all of the hardships that could have arisen, she remained strong and continued her job while juggling parenthood.
Her Grandchildren and Children
Pauley’s children are all grown up and responsible for their families.
Her eldest son, Ross Trudeau, a director of digital media at Fishtank Learning, is married to Jessie Bullock.
In the same way, her daughter Rachel married Robert Gary Steinsdoerfer in November 2014. She and her spouse have two children: a son and a daughter. She works as a lawyer for Liberty Mutual Insurance.
Pauley is also the grandma of two more children. Her youngest son has two sons from his marriage to Juliana Margaret Thorsten in June 2014.
Pauley enjoys her marriage to Garry Trudeau at the age of 70, with her grown-up children and lovely grandchildren, and her net worth is reported to be over $40 million.
