Karin Keller-Sutter grew up in Wil before moving to Neuchâtel. She studied language interpretation at the Dolmetscherschule in Zurich (now the School of Applied Linguistics at the University of Applied Sciences in Zurich, Switzerland). She also has a post-graduate pedagogy degree from Fribourg University and has worked as a professor in a professional school.
Professional Career of Karin Keller-Sutter
Keller-Sutter began her political career as a municipal councilor between 1992 and 2000. She presided over the municipal assembly in 1997. From 1996 to 2000, she served as a Kantonsrat deputy while also presiding over the FDP’s local arm. On March 12, 2000, Keller-Sutter was elected to the St. Gallen Canton Government Council, where she was appointed to the Security and Justice Department.
She was also a member of the Cantonal Directors’ Justice and Police Conference. She presided over the government from 2006-2007. Keller-Sutter ran for the Swiss Federal Council seat of Hans-Rudolf Merz on September 22, 2010, but was not elected. With 65% of the vote, she was elected to represent St. Gallen canton in the Council of States on October 23, 2011.
Karin Keller-Sutter is the vice chairman of the Board of Trustees of the St. Gallen International Studies Foundation. On October 8, 2018, she announced her candidacy for the Swiss Federal Council once more, this time for Johann Schneider-newly Ammann’s retired seat. On December 5, 2018, she was elected to the Swiss Federal Council with 154 votes out of 237 casts.
