The Professional Career of John Marty Stuart
Marty moved to Memphis with Johnny Cash in 1985 and added to the Class of ’55 album, which also featured Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison, and Jerry Lee Lewis. Following this year, he issued a self-titled album on the label, which featured the single “Arlene,” which peaked at number 20 on the Billboard country charts. In 1986, he got his first cover story, “Nashville’s New Hopes,” in the Mid-South magazine.
Stuart moved to Mississippi after Marty’s marriage to Cindy Cash terminated in divorce in 1988. Stuart gets the courage to attempt again as a singer after Roland White asks him to rejoin his band as their fiddler.
His first MCA record, Hillbilly Rock, was published in 1989. Two tracks from Hillbilly Rock became successes in 1990, propelling him to financial success. Stuart issued another album, Tempted, in 1991, with the title track becoming his first Top-5 hit. Marty donated the composition “Up Above My Head/Blind Bartimus” to the AIDS charity album Red Hot + Country, published by the Red Hot Organization in 1994, alongside Jerry Sullivan and Tammy Sullivan.
He released the CD The Marty Party Hit Pack in 1995. Honky Tonkin’s second record, What I Do Best, was published in 1996.
