Political Shift: Democrat Support to Political Activism

Up until 2008, Kessler was a Democrat supporter with liberal views. He actively voted for Barack Obama and engaged in activism with the Occupy movement. However, his involvement ended when he was dismissed for attempting to register homeless individuals. Activism and Controversy: Unveiling Offensive Tweets and Legal Troubles

November 2016 marked a significant moment as Kessler exposed offensive tweets by Charlottesville vice-mayor Wes Bellamy. This move followed Bellamy’s call for the removal of the Robert E. Lee statue, leading Kessler to circulate a petition demanding Bellamy’s resignation. Bellamy voluntarily resigned from his teaching position at Albemarle High School during the ensuing investigations.

Legal Incidents: Assault Charge and Consequences

In 2005, he was convicted of theft, obstructing justice, and a series of failures to appear and register, as well as multiple driving offenses and tickets.

In January 2017, while collecting signatures for his petition, Kessler faced legal trouble. Arrested for misdemeanor assault after punching a man, he pleaded guilty and received a sentence of 50 hours of community service and a 30-day suspended sentence. A perjury charge was initially filed but later dropped.

As the primary organizer of the Unite the Right rally, Kessler was the first defendant named in the case. Initially scheduled for late 2020, the trial faced a postponement due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Subsequently, the trial commenced on October 25, 2021, and the jury delivered its verdict on November 23. Kessler was held accountable on two charges: civil conspiracy under Virginia state law and involvement in race-based harassment or violence.

Writing: The Daily Caller and VDare

April 2017 saw Kessler contracted to write two pieces for The Daily Caller, and he contributed another in May, focusing on the Charlottesville protests over the Lee statue. Kessler also wrote for the anti-immigrant white nationalist site VDare, including a controversial post claiming government genocide against white people due to policies causing low Caucasian birth rates.

Following ProPublica’s investigation into Kessler’s ties to white supremacist groups, The Daily Caller severed connections with him.

In response, Kessler was sworn in as a member of the far-right organization, the Proud Boys. Founder Gavin McInnes later expelled Kessler from the group once his racially charged views became known.
