On October 19, 1964, Gary Tygert Burton was given the name. When Pennington’s parents divorced when he was quite young, he and his brother Wynn moved home with their mother. Following his mother’s second marriage, his stepfather adopted both boys, giving them his last name.
Pennington learned carpentry and home remodeling techniques on his own, but at first, that wasn’t what he wanted to accomplish with his life. Pennington attended Kennesaw State University for art and history after graduating from Sprayberry High School in Marietta, Georgia. However, he then switched to the Art Institute of Atlanta and earned a Bachelor’s degree in graphic design there. Pennington worked in gardening and construction during that time to pay for school.
Pennington tried his hand at modeling in his final semester after being noticed by an agency. He created numerous effective campaigns for Levi’s, Diet Coke, and Bayer.
Fame on television
Following graduation from college, Pennington worked as a set designer on the Oscar-winning movie Leaving Las Vegas. Soon after, she was cast in TLC’s Trading Spaces in 2000. The network’s unexpected success with Trading Spaces helped launch Pennington to celebrity, which was certainly unanticipated.
Pennington was hired by ABC in 2003 to serve as host and producer of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. That program likewise saw unexpected success and ran from 2003 to 2012.
