Since the mid-2010s, Drew Starkey has been actively contributing to the entertainment sector. When he starred as Rafe Cameron in the Netflix teen drama series Outer Banks, he gained a devoted following.

The 27-year-old actor was cast as the elder brother of Sarah Cameron, played by actress Madelyn Cline, in the show. Cameron, played by Drew Starkey, is a deranged dropout who struggles with drugs and has father issues.

Starkey, who is best known for his performance as Cameron, did not audition for the part in the first place. When questioned how his character was initially characterized, the actor confessed in an interview with Pop Culturalist that he had auditioned for a different role in the show.

He added that he had submitted an audition tape for the role of John B [now played by actor Chase Stokes], but that the showrunners felt he was a better fit for another role.
“I had initially auditioned for John B. “I recorded it on tape and sent it in, and…casting viewed it and said, ‘He’s terrible for this character,'” the actor continued.

Starkey also went into detail about the casting process and how he was chosen for the role of Cameron.

“…he’s not it at all…but we have this other role that we believe he might be suited for,” the showrunners stated. So they flew me [Starkey] to Charleston, South Carolina, where I had a director’s meeting with Jonas (Pate) and Shannon (Burke) and a large group of people.

The actor went on to express his gratitude for the love and support he has received from his fans. He admitted that he was not anticipating so much affection because he had previously played negative characters.

“I suppose I embrace the hate and detest,” Starkey added, “and I don’t know why, but it makes me feel good that people dislike this character so much because that was the purpose.”

However, when asked about the audience’s good response, he added:

I’ve received so much love and positivity from folks I didn’t expect. Because I’ve previously played some shady characters, I’ve received a lot of backlashes online.

According to IMDb, the actor has 30 acting credits to his name as of this writing. Love, Simon, The Hate U Give, Mine 9, Scream, and Just Mercy are among the most prominent undertakings.
