In a July 2017 interview with The New York Times, the former WTVH-5 anchor stated that he is not black. He said: ” “When people say things like, “You are black,” I don’t encourage it, but I also don’t dismiss it… That’s great if you want to call me that. But, you know, I don’t know a single black person in my entire family.”
Despite his appearance, he claims to be of white ethnicity. His parents, he claimed, were both as white as a refrigerator. Some lambasted him for making such a bold assertion, accusing him of spending his entire life attempting to fit into the so-called “White Norm.”

Mike married Debbie Gibaratz in 1991 when he was 21 years old. Debbie is a former Trenton softball and basketball all-state player. Mike met Debbie at Syracuse University, where they were both students.
