Jonathan Karl was born in Virginia on January 19, 1968, and relocated to South Dakota with his parents when he was a teenager. He witnessed his parents recording the oral histories of laborers who assisted in the creation of Mount Rushmore. It truly motivated him, and that’s how Karl’s interest in history and journalism grew!
In terms of his schooling, he received a Phi Beta Kappa diploma from Vassar College. He was the editor-in-chief of The Vassar Spectator throughout his collegiate years.
For ABC News, Jonathan has been assigned to a new position. Karl began working as a reporter and researcher at The New Republic in 2017. He then moved on to work for the New York Post as a reporter.
After that, he became a Congressional Correspondent for CNN. He left the network in 2003 to become a Senior Foreign Affairs Correspondent for ABC News. He was named Senior National Security Correspondent for ABC News in 2005.
Since 2012, he has been acting as the Chief White House Correspondent. In 2017, he was also named ABC News’ chief Washington correspondent. He’s covered the White House, Capitol Hill, the Pentagon, and the State Department among other significant Washington beats.
