Mena Massoud is a Canadian actor of Egyptian descent best known for playing Aladdin in Disney’s 2019 musical fantasy film Aladdin.

He appeared in the film opposite Will Smith as Genie and Naomi Scott as Sultan’s daughter Jasmine.

Massoud was born in Cairo, Egypt, on September 17, 1991, to Egyptian Coptic Orthodox Christian parents.

His family also includes two older sisters.

He and his family moved to Toronto, Canada, when he was three and a half years old, where he spent the rest of his childhood.

In an interview with NPR’s Susan Davis in May 2019, Massoud indicated that he was still deeply connected to his Egyptian culture and origin.

He also disclosed that his parents wanted to travel from Egypt to Canada because they believed things were becoming hazardous and they wanted to provide a better life for their family.

“We’re – we’re Coptic Christian. And my parents just felt like things were getting a little too dangerous when I was growing up. And they wanted to create a better life for their family. So they decided to immigrate.”

The Run This Town actor attended St. Brother André Catholic High School while growing up in Markham, Ontario.

Massoud holds a Bachelor of Arts in Theater and Acting from Ryerson University.

Massoud was also rumored to be gay on the internet.

In the early 2010s, he began his career.

Massoud made his television debut in 2011 as a member of Al-Qaeda on The CW’s Nikita.

He also appeared in a few more television shows that year, including Combat Hospital, Poser, and The 99. He appeared in 25 episodes of the television series The 99 as Hafiz the Preserver.

Following that, he was cast in major productions with well-known actors. In the 2015 television series Open Heart, he appeared alongside Tori Anderson and Karis Cameron.

In 2018, he co-starred with John Krasinski and Wendell Pierce in Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan.

He was cast as the lead actor in Disney’s Aladdin alongside actor Smith. The film, a live-action adaptation of the same-named animation feature, was released in May 2019, In 2017.

For his performance, Massoud garnered a Teen Choice Award nomination as well as two National Film & TV Award nominations.

As a result of the film’s success, he was cast as Ethan Hart in the Hulu original series Reprisal in 2019. He also played Chaz in the thriller Strange but True and Kamal in the drama Run This Town the same year.

As of this writing, Massoud is involved in three projects that have yet to be released. Netflix’s feature films The Royal Treatment, In Broad Daylight, and Lamya’s Poem are among the projects.
