He enrolled in the University of Liverpool in 1970 and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in 1974. During his second year there, he became interested in playing, and in 1975 he enrolled at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), where he graduated in 1977 with a Master’s degree in drama and a Bancroft Gold Medal as the most promising actor of his year.

Lesser made multiple appearances on BBC Television. As an associate artist with the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC), Shakespeare performed roles such as Troilus (Troilus and Cressida), Edgar (King Lear), Petruchio, Romeo, Henry Bolingbroke, Brutus (Julius Caesar), Leontes (Winter’s Tale), and Richard III.
Lesser is a regular radio contributor who played the title character in Lindsey Davis’s first five Marcus Didius Falco mysteries for BBC Radio. He has also recorded several audiobooks, including the majority of Charles Dickens’s works.
For his recording of Great Expectations, he received a Talkie Award. Other works include John Milton’s and Homer’s Paradise Lost, as well as current books by Robert Harris (Fatherland) and Philip Pullman. For two months in 2013, Lesser was a regular cast member in Ambridge Extra, a BBC Radio 4 Extra spin-off from the BBC Radio 4 drama The Archers.
In 2015, Lesser became a prominent supporter of the Chapel Lane Theatre Company in Stratford-Upon-Avon, England.
