Rita’s acclaimed reporting has garnered her five Emmy Awards, including one for investigative reporting and two for coverage of Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin’s death. Rita Braver is a Maryland native who was born in April 1948. Bettie Braver Sugar and Sharon Braver Cohen, her two sisters, were born into a Jewish family. Rita experienced loss at an early age when her father died owing to health concerns. She obtained a Political Science degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Rita knew exactly what she wanted to be since she was a child. Her enthusiasm inspired her to start her newspaper, first in her neighborhood and then at camp, and later in junior high. She was also the first female editor of her high school newspaper.

She was turned down for many newspaper jobs when she first approached them to pursue a career in journalism. She did, however, obtain an entry-level job at WWL-TV, a CBS station in New Orleans.
In 1983, she became the CBS network’s law correspondent, and her career took off. The Iran Contra case, abortion, civil rights, and organized crime were among the controversial and developing themes she covered for the CBS Evening News. She later became CBS’s main White House correspondent during Bill Clinton’s presidency in 1998.

A nearly half-century pair met during their college years and began their courting in a law school study hall at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. They were both hardworking undergraduates who enjoyed political science and English classes.

Barnett proposed to Braver after their first “study date.” She respectfully declined, however. Barnett took the proposal seriously and was devastated when she was turned down. But they continued to date, and five years later, he asked her again, and she finally said yes, and they are now married!

Rita and her husband moved to Washington, D.C. shortly after their marriage when Barnett was offered a Supreme Court clerkship with Justice Byron R. White. After six years of marriage, the couple welcomed their first child, a daughter called Meredith Barnett, in 1978, the family of two bloomed into a complete family.
