Jonathan came into this world on March 26, 1985, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. His father, Jim Groff, is a horse trainer, and his mother, Julie, is a teacher. He had an older brother named David.
Groff was always interested in the arts and theater, and while still in school, he appeared in several musicals at the Fulton Opera House. This paved the way for him to pursue acting as a career.

The 33-year-old actor went on to star in several additional musicals, TV shows, and films, including Jesse St. James in the US musical comedy series Glee (2010), HBO LGBT comedy series Looking (2016), Bradley Cooper blockbuster American Sniper (2014), and Mindhunter (2014). (2017).

Jonathan was spotted with Gavin Creel, another actor, in 2009, after proclaiming himself gay. However, after only one year of dating, the couple broke up for undisclosed reasons.
After splitting up with Gavin, Jonathan began dating another actor, Zachary Quinto. This, like his first romance, ended in 2013, after three years, leaving him single.
He has not been in any other relationships since that time. He’s presumably single and waiting for the ideal person to marry, or he’s enjoying his single life.
Putting his failed love stories aside, he has other things to be grateful for in his soon-to-be-married life. Jonathan’s close friend and Glee co-star Lea Michele said in May 2018 that he will be her lucky ‘Maid of Honor’ at her wedding to Zandy Reich, head of clothing brand AYR.
