Lawther made his professional début as John Blakemore in Sir David Hare’s South Downs at Chichester Festival Theatre when he was 16 years old. He traveled to London to fight for the main part against hundreds of other young actors. The production went to the West End after a local run, where he performed the part in sold-out runs at the Harold Pinter Theatre while still studying for his A Levels.
