Leila George, Sean Penn’s third wife, and he have officially divorced. On April 22, 2022, the divorce was finalized after five years of dating and more than a year of marriage.
Four years after they first began dating, the couple were married.
In the midst of the COVID-19 epidemic, they were married in a private ceremony in June 2020. When Penn announced their Zoom wedding, he made an appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers. While the couple was in their house with his children and George’s brothers, the county commissioner was on Zoom. George was the third woman he had been married to.
Madonna, to whom he was wed from 1985 to 1989, served as his first wife. He later wed Robin Wright in 1996, and the two divorced in 2010. Like his first two marriages, Penn’s third marriage also ended in divorce.

Divorce of Sean Penn and Leila George
After they had been married for over a year, in October 2021, George requested a divorce. With irreconcilable differences as her justification, she did it in Los Angeles County Superior Court. Additionally, it was said in the court documents that the differences “lead to the irremediable breakdown of the marriage, making it impossible for the Parties to live together as husband and wife.”
But neither Penn nor George have formally stated why they broke up. The divorce has now been finalized after six months. The information that Penn and George were now legally single was first released by TMZ.
Sean Penn Admits Responsibility for The Breakup
Penn holds himself responsible for their breakup, despite George not blaming her ex-boyfriend. He acknowledged being disloyal in different ways despite never having cheated on his wife.
He acknowledged being unreliable throughout their relationship in an interview with Hollywood Authentic on April 9, 2022. He allowed himself to disregard his wife and placed booze before his relationship.
The fact that he was “completely sad and led to booze and Ambien at 11 in the morning, by watching the news, by watching the Trump era, by watching it and just despairing,” in his opinion, was more important than other things.
The age difference between him and his third wife, which is almost 32 years, is what he blamed for their marital problems. He playfully admitted that “beautiful, extremely nice, imaginative, talented young women” do not appreciate their elderly husbands spending the night on the couch and drinking in the wee hours.
He admitted that he still loved his ex-wife but expressed uncertainty as to whether they would ever get back together. In addition, he was striving to improve as a man for her. He could now go for about 12 days without using his phone or watching the news. He was also less stressed than he had previously been.
He stopped depending on drink to make things better. Although he occasionally consumes vodka and takes Ambien to fall asleep at night, he no longer uses these substances to “hide from the world” as he formerly did.
George hasn’t yet commented on their relationship or separation.
